Abstract

This study aimed to find out the types of defence mechanisms and their effect as portrayed in Girl in the Blue Coat novel by Monica Hesse (2016). The approach of this study was qualitative, and the result of the study has represented descriptively rather than statistically. The data were analyzed based on theory from Anna Freud (1966) entitled The Ego and the Mechanism of Defence. The result of this study explains that there are three major types of defence mechanisms developed by the main character as depicted in the novel such as repression, regression, and reaction formation in order to face her daily life during wartime. There are unhealthy effects of the defence mechanism the main character uses, such as the main character becomes a self-centred person and has a low social sensitivity. Keywords: Anxiety, Defence Mechanisms, Reaction Formation, Regression, Repression
