Abstract

This study aims to analyze politeness strategies represented in two related movies which have four sequels in total. The objects of this study are movies entitled The Hunger Games (2012) and The Hunger Games – Catching Fire (2013) based on the books by Suzanne Collins. Qualitative research method is applied in this study as the analysis presented in the form of text and utterance. Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory used to identify the types of politeness strategies along with the sub strategies. Moreover, to analyze the meaning, the writer follows the theory of George Yule (1996). From the data analysis, it was found that there are fifty three main data of the utterances that were collected from the two movies. Katniss uses the four strategies, meanwhile Peeta uses only three strategies. The most politeness strategies used by the main characters is positive politeness since they want to make a good impression to hearer so that he does not get offended. Moreover, the most pragmatic meaning found is requesting in order to get what the speaker’s wants.
