Abstract

The title of this study was “Totalitarianism in Cecelia Ahern’s Flawed”. The purpose of this study was to analyze the totalitarian regimes and how the protagonist resisted the system. The object of the study was a Flawed novel published in 2016 by Cecelia Ahern. It was the story of Celestine, a perfect girl who turns to be a flawed girl. She resisted the Guild and Judge Crevan as the one who had total control over citizens. The study applied the qualitative method as the analysis presented in the essay form. As guidance, this study used Hannah Arendt’s (1958) characteristics of Totalitarianism and Michel Foucault’s (1982) power and subject theory. The result of the study showed that the ruler, and his institution performed five out of six characteristics of totalitarian proposed by Arendt (1958), which were elaborating ideology, single powerful leader, a system of terror, technology conditioned, and central control. As opposed to the ruler’s power, the protagonist showed resistance to the power.
