Abstract

This study entitled “Acculturation: Contestation between Identity of Being and Identity of Becoming in Ibi Zoboi’s American Street”. The purpose of the study was to analyze the acculturation process of the main character. It was conducted in qualitative method because it was presented in word and text forms. For the guidance, the theory used was Stuart Hall’s (1994) cultural identity and diaspora. Furthermore, Tajfel and Turner’s (1979) social identity theory is applied to portray the stages of acculturation. The object of the study was American Street novel by Ibi Zoboi published in 2017. It is a story of Fabiola Toussaint, a Haitian girl who moves to America. She went through acculturation to be accepted in the new place. The showed that the protagonist performed two forms of acculturation. Firstly, she maintained her original identity which was Haitan. Secondly, she adapted to host culture which was American identity. In the process of shifting identity, she merged both of the identities but the Haitian one was still the dominant identity of her.
