Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the implicature, especially conversational implicature and the implied meaning found in the direct conversation of Brother novel by David Chariandy. The writer uses Grice's (1975) theory to identify and analyze the data. This study uses qualitative methods to analyze the data. The result showed that there are 23 utterances that contain implied meaning. 16 data are particularized conversational implicatures and 7 data are generalized conversational implicatures. It can be concluded that understanding a context is very important to interpret the meaning implied in the utterances.
