Abstract

This study is entitled “The Analysis of Maxims and the Violation in Brad Bird's "Incredibles 2" movie dialogue.” This study is aimed to determine the types of maxims, the violation, and along with the implied meaning of violation. A Qualitative method was applied in this study, and the selected utterances within selected scenes of Incredibles 2 movie dialogue were identified into the maxim classification based on Grice (1991) and at the same time discussed the implied meaning by using Grice theory of implicature (1991). There are 38 utterances found from the selected dialogue. They are 3 data for maxim quantity, 5 data for maxim quality, 4 data for maxim relevance, and 2 data for maxim manner. Moreover, the writer found 24 data of maxim violation found in the characters' utterances: 7 data for violation maxim of quantity, 6 data for violation of maxim quality, 6 data for violation maxim of relevance, and 5 data for violation maxim of manner. It is revealed that some characters of Incredibles 2 obey the rules of cooperative principles to prevent further argument and misunderstanding between them. The violation of maxim in Incredibles 2 movie occurs since some movie characters have the intention to refuse to give an answer or achieve another purpose. At last, the Incredibles 2 movie dialogue's implied meaning occurs when the speaker tries to achieve its goals, whether it is to strengthen their statement or assert their point.
