Abstract
This study investigates the crucial issue that can be found in society. The purposes of this study are to analyze the depiction of racial discrimination faced by Rashad Butler and to uncover the form of racial discrimination experienced by Rashad Butler in analyzing the novel entitled All American Boys written by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely. It portrays a story about two high school students, who have different races, both characters known as the protagonist is an African-American teenager, and the antagonist is a Caucasian teenager. The novel is the reflection of real social conditions about racial discrimination in the United State of America. It is presenting the inequality treatment that leads to a discriminative attitude based on a different race through the Colored or Black Community. Moreover, it is also supported by society creates boundaries toward him. The research gap of this study is the investigation of finding the reflection of police brutality. The method that has been used to analyze this study is qualitative text-based analysis. To analyze this novel, the theory of Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic (2017) is used to support the concept of those related explanations about the racial discrimination issue. The result of this study shows the depiction of racial discrimination such as stereotype, prejudice, and unequal treatments and the types of discrimination such as micro-aggression, unconscious discrimination, and structural discrimination that reflect the unequal action experienced by Rashad Butler.
