Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the depiction of wild animal exploitation and the depiction of human-animal relations represented by animal characters attributed to human characteristics. The object is The One and Only Ivan (2012) written by Katherine Applegate. This study is guided by Animal Studies in Ecocriticism approach, specifically Animal Theory (2015) by Derek Ryan. This study applies a qualitative method since the analysis is presented in the form of an essay. The results show that humans exploiting wild animals in the form of capture, captivation, abuse, and display as entertainment. In human-animal relations, the exploitation is based on human financial reasons as a survival tool. Keywords: animals, anthropomorphism, exploitation, humans, relation
