Abstract

This study focused on analyzing the types and the reasons influencing the YouTubers do code-mixing and code-switching in their utterances at Titan Tyra YouTube channel. The aims of this study to find out the types of code-mixing and code-switching and the reasons of using it. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative method. The data analyzed using code-mixing and code-switching theory by Hoffmann (1991). The Data collected only by retrieving data containing language substitution in English-Indonesian as well as in Indonesian-English. The result of this study showed that there were two types of code-mixing such as 20 data identified as intra-sentential code-mixing and 5 data is intra-lexical code-mixing and there is no data identified as involving a change of pronunciation and the dominant types in this study was intra-sentential code-mixing. Meanwhile, there were three types of code-switching from 17 data, such as 6 data classified as intra-sentential code-switching, 9 data classified as inter-sentential code-switching, and 2 data classified as establishing continuity with the previous speaker. This study also found five reasons of using code-mixing and code-switching. The most reason why the YouTubers do code-mixing and code-switching is talking about particular topic.
