Abstract

This study aims at explaining the struggle against racial discriminations experienced by black community of Selma, Alabama in 1965 as portrayed in “Selma” film. In this study, the writer uses qualitative research method with theories of racial discrimination from Joan Ferrante (2008) and racial equality theory of Gregory W. Streich (2005). Based on the data analysis, it is found that racial discriminations in “Selma” film occur in two types, individual discrimination and institutionalized discrimination. Furthermore, the condition of black community in “Selma” is found to be far from equal in comparison to that of white community in the film. It is caused by discriminatory Jim Crow laws that hinder blacks from accessing their rights to vote and oppress them in their daily lives. Series of incidents of discrimination strengthen the spirits of the blacks to press for the legislation of black voting rights by holding marches from Selma to Montgomery that will grant them equal access to privileges being enjoyed solely by the whites.
