Abstract

This study presents human’s psychological problems in The Goldfinch novel by Donna Tartt. Because the main character in the novel finds the difficulties to control his anxiety, hence this thesis entitled “Anxiety and Defense Mechanism of the Main Character ‘The Decker’ in The Goldfinch Novel”. Therefore, the approach of this study was a qualitative approach and the main theory was Freud’s theory to analyze it. The theory is applied to identify the causes and types of the main character’s anxiety and to analyze kinds of defense mechanism which the main character applied in the novel. The result of this study was the success of the main character’s actions in dealing with his anxiety through seven kinds of a defense mechanism.
