Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the sexism in “The Story of an Hour,” and “Boys and Girls” short stories based on existentialism theory.This study describes the reason of the sexism as well as to depict the responses of the female characters in two short stories towards the sexism that eventually force them to live in a lie. The qualitative method is used to analyze the data source taken from the short stories. As a guidance, the writer adopted the theory of Existentialism by Sartre (1943). The practice of sexism towards women prevents them from obtaining their freedom as human beings and they end up living in social roles and valuing the system that are contradictory to their essences. The result of this study shows that women are oppressed because there is a power which limits their freedom in the way they cannot realize and determine their own essences as human beings and forces them to live in in bad faith.
