Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the deixis words, especialy the types and functions of deixis in American Muslim Short Stories by Ayesha Mattu and Nura Maznavi. The theory that is used in conducting this study is the theory by Levinson (1983). He explains the types of deixis, namely person, spatial, temporal, discourse, and social deixis. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. From the data analysis, it was found that there are 44 data of deixis, the dominant types of deixis found is temporal deixis 17 data, then person deixis 10 data, spatial deixis 7 data, discourse deixis 6 data and social deixis 4 data. The functions of the deixis found is to understand the meaning of word or utterance. Keywords: Deixis, Types of deixis, Functions of deixis, Qualitative, Short stories.
