Abstract
The title of this study is “Defense Mechanism Driven by Psychological Trauma in Stephanie Burgis’s The Dragon with a Chocolate Heart Novel” and aiming to identify the defense mechanisms used by the main character. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach. The psychoanalysis theory by Freud (1890-1923) is used to identify the defense mechanisms and the indication of penis envy, and The Transitional Object theory by Winnicott (1951) is also applied to analyse the indication of the utilization of a particular object as a substitution to reduce anxiety. The result of the study is defense mechanisms used by the main character as the affect from psychological trauma. Prior to the psychological trauma, the main character suffers from the verbal abuse by her family. Keywords: defense mechanism, narrative elements, psychoanalysis, psychological trauma
