Abstract

This study is aimed to find and analyze how patriarchal system oppress woman in Alias Grace (1996) novel by Margaret Atwood. The discussion related to the content of the study focused on how woman’s struggle against patriarchal system. The method used for this study is a qualitative approach by describing and analyzing the main character in the novel. The theory used is the theory of patriarchy by two experts Sylvia Walby and Kate Millett. The result of this study shows that Grace as the main character succeeded to get free from the oppression that came from patriarchal system. She also became an example of a woman who struggled to fight back the oppression and came out to be independent and not submissive. Hopefully, this study can be useful for English Department students. Keywords: Patriarchal System, Patriarchy, Woman’s Struggle, Oppression, Independent.
