Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the oppression and the types of oppression on women through the women characters in The Birthmark and Rappaccini’s Daughter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The method used for this study was qualitative approach by exploring and understanding the problems of the characters in the two short stories. The theory used was the theory of psychoanalytic feminism by Luce Irigaray. The result of the study shows that verbal and physical violence are experienced by the female characters in selected short stories.
