Abstract

The writer conducts this study to identify categories of translation shift applied by translator and to find out how they occur in translation process from English into Indonesia in Third Girl novel by Agatha Christie. Methodology used in this study is descriptive qualitative in order to reach the objectives of the study. The data were taken from the dialogues and narratives in Third Girl novel then they were analyzed based on the category translation shift according to Catford’s theory. The data analysis shows that: (1). Not all categories of translation shift based on Catford are used in translating phrasal verbs in the novel. (2). The most dominant shift found are unit shift, followed by class shift, and structure shift. (3). The findings show that there are 18 unit shifts, 6 class shifts, 2 combination between class and structure shift, and 1 structure shifts. (4). No intra-system shift in translating English phrasal verb into Indonesian found in this study.
