Abstract

The purpose of the study is to analyze the taboo words in the sociolinguistics aspect. The object of the analysis is 50 Cent’s song lyric. The method that is used in this study is qualitative descriptive method. This method describes the analysis in the form of essays. The data were classified into four types, they are epithet, profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity. The functions of the taboo words were described into some categories. A theory from Battistella (2005) was chosen to analyze the types of the taboo words. Meanwhile a theory from Wardhaugh (2006) was chosen to analyze the functions of the taboo words. The results of the study concluded that 50 Cent’s song lyrics mostly use obscenity type to express feeling using words that have impolite meanings that are forbidden for public use. For the functions of the taboo words used by 50 Cent’s is to draw attention to oneself. Keywords: Linguistics,sociolinguistics,taboo words, and lyrics analysis.
