Abstract

This semiotics study aimed to explore the meaning of the signs which consist of denotative, connotative and myth. And also to discover the implied messages found in the object which are television advertisements of Ponds Flawless White Seven Days to Love that consist of 22 images from 5 videos. They are analyzed using Roland Barthes` signification theory and using descriptive qualitative approach. In analyzing those ads found that denotation meaning derives from the image according to the story line of advertising. Then the connotation meaning is in the form of associations of those 22 images, one of them is the depictions of dark-skinned woman who is left by his boyfriend and later they met. However, he seemed not recognize her, but he was with another woman who has brighter skin, derived from the artists. That description is the denotation meaning, while the female figure with dark skin associated with the figure of less beautiful, less attractive, while whites are considered more attractive and have a better life is the connotation. Then, from the connotation description would be obtained the myth value that white signifies a perfect physical beauty and shows the higher social classes.
