Abstract

This thesis presents an analysis of positive politeness strategies implied in a novel entitled “Divergent”. The reason of choosing the object of the anaysis is because many utterances that appear in this novel shows kinds of dialogues. By using qualitative as the approach of this study, the data and the result of the analysis are presented naratively in the essay form in the data analysis. The data were collected by reading, coding utterances, classifying the utterances, and interpreting the reduce data and relating to expert theory. The theory used to analyze the data is Brown and Lavi son’s theory of strategies of positive politeness in the utterances in the Divergent novel. By using the Brown and Lavison’s theory, produce results of fourteen strategies are used in the utterances in Divergent novel which took of 50 data of utterances. They are comliment, promise, giving attention, in-group makers, giving sympathy, joking, suggesting, offering, asking for reason, exaggeration, including both speaker and herear in activity, optimistic, special discourse makers, and support. Meanwhile, there are four most strategies are used; nine data in the compliment strategies, eight data in the promise strategies, seven data in the giving attention strategies, and seven data in the in-group makers strategies. Based on those data show that positive politeness strategies are used by people who have same age and in informal situation such as in family members.
