Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze the connotation meanings of the verbal and non verbal signs of selected cigarette advertisements. Further, to find out the myth that motivates those advertisements. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative method, because semiotic analysis rarely uses qualitative method. It means that the writer collected the advertisements to be analyzed, and then, interpreted them in description. There are five of selected cigarette advertisements. Those were collected from some pictures on the internet. In analyzing those advertisements, the writer found some signs in each cigarette of the advertisements. Those are five signs in “Sampoerna A-Mild”, five signs in “Djarum super”, four signs in “Marlboro”, five signs in “Dunhill, and five signs in “Djarum Black Menthol”. Besides, the writer found that all of those advertisements have the same verbal sign and different color, but not the picture. Keywords : semiotics, denotative, connotative, myth, advertisement.
