Abstract

This study aims to analyze types of deixis, references, and functions of deixis in the utterances which are used in the “Hopeless” novel by Colleen Hoover. This study used descriptive qualitative method as the finding and the analysis are described in the form of essay. The theory from Cruse (2004) and Birner (2013) were used. By using qualitative approach, the writer found 35 data from “Hopeless” novel those are 13 data for person deixis, 9 data for temporal deixis, 3 data for spatial deixis, 7 data for discourse deixis, and 3 data for social deixis. From analyzing the data, the most dominant deixis is person deixis. Currently, the function of deixis which the most commonly found in “Hopeless” novel is to indicate a person who is identified through reference to the context of conversation.
