Abstract

This study is aimed to portray Identity crisis as the tools of the adaptation process for the Indian characters in In a Free State by Jhumpa Lahiri. Through this study, it can be described that the Indian character experiences identity crisis during his time living in the USA. Furthermore, the recognition that is gained by the Indian characters from their new environment is received because the Indian characters place themselves in between two cultures. In this study, the concept of identity by Kahryn Woodward is applied to analyze Identity crisis in In a free State novel. The result of this study shows the presence of identity crisis through identity as being, identity as becoming, custom, and tradition by the Indian characters in In a Free State novel as the tools to gains recognition from the new environment. Moreover, in the end of this study it is found that recognition is the cause of identity crisis to the Indian characters in In a Free State novel.
