Abstract

This study is entitled “Anxiety and Defense Mechanism of the Main Character in Finding Audrey novel”. The aim of this study is to find out the types of the main character’sanxieties, to describe the factors of the main character’s anxiety, and to analyze the defense mechanism faced by the main character to cope her anxiety. Freud’s theory of anxiety and defense mechanism used to identify and analyze the data. Freud divides the anxiety into three kinds such as realistic anxiety, neurotic anxiety, and moral anxiety. Moreover, Freud also proposed several defense mechanisms there are repression, displacement, sublimation, fantasy, denial, rationalization, projection, identification, and etc. In analyzing the data, the writer used Qualitative approach. The result of this study shows that Audrey suffers two types of anxieties namely neurotic and moral anxiety. Furthermore, to reduce her anxiety, there are fourdefense mechanisms done by Audrey such as repression, projection, fantasy, and denial.
