Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to examine the social class issues that are shown from the characters, settings, and conflicts in the three short stories: The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, Sweet Potato Pie by Eugenia Collier, and The Butler by Roald Dahl. Basically. This study answers three questions about the kinds of social classes, the economic conditions that influence the characters, and the impacts of the power struggle within the three short stories. This research used qualitative research method that presents the data in the essay forms and used Marxist theory by Karl Marx as the reference of the analysis. It can be concluded from the three short stories that social classes can be divided into two, namely the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, then the economic conditions that can influence the actions and behaviors the characters, and the power struggle of the social status succeeded in giving impacts.
