Abstract

This study is entitled “Women’s Language in the US Presidential First Debate 2016 (A Study of Sociolinguistic)”. The aim of this study is to analyze how ‘women’s language’ used by thepresident candidates in the US presidential first debate 2016. Lakoff’s theory of ‘Women’s Language’ used to identify and analyze the data. Lakoff proposed some ‘women’s language’ features namely specific color words, weak expletives, hedges or fillers, empty adjectives, intensifier ‘so’, question tags, polite forms, and question intonation on declarative answer. In analyzing the data findings, the writer used Qualitative approach. This study found that both man and woman with the same power used some ‘women’s language’ features such as hedges or fillers, empty adjectives, intensifier ‘so’, and polite forms. The result of this study shows that the ratio of using ‘women’s language’ by female candidate is higher than by male candidate, though it is only slight difference. Moreover, in this debate, ‘women’s language’ features were used as a way to express hesitation, lack of confidence, soften strong statement, and politeness device.
