Abstract

This study aims to analyze the discrimination issues depicted in the movie and how the protagonist deals with the issue. The object of this study is the movie entitled Shirley, directed by John Ridley and released on Netflix in 2024. This study used Theodorson & Theodorson’s (1979) theory of racial discrimination. A qualitative method is used to analyze the issues of racial discrimination depicted in the movie. The result of this study showed that racial discrimination appears in many forms, such as prejudice, ethnocentrism, stereotypes, and segregation. This study also showed that the protagonist dealt with the issue through various responses that gradually developed and changed over time. In conclusion, the practice of discrimination that occurs in social life often refers to the race of a group that is considered weak or a minority. This is based on long-entrenched and developed negative stereotypes and prejudices. Feeling superior also contributes to the practice of racial discrimination being considered commonplace.
