Abstract

This study aims to explain the portrayal of defense mechanisms in the novel As Long As the Lemon Trees Grow by Zoulfa Katouh. The objectives of this study are to describe the depiction of defense mechanisms and how the main character responds to these mechanisms, which influence her psychological performance by using Anna Freud's (1936) theory. A qualitative research method was applied to examine and interpret the collected data. The findings reveal the portrayal of various defense mechanisms employed by the main character, including denial, displacement, projection, rationalization, and reaction formation. The findings also show how defense mechanisms influence psychological performance by affecting three key aspects: emotion regulation, cognitive processes, and behavior. This study highlights the psychological struggles depicted in the narrative and offers insight into how defense mechanisms function as a response to trauma and distress in fictional representations.
