Abstract

This study, entitled It Starts With Us aims to analyze the signs of toxic relationships between the main characters in a selected novel and to describe how the main characters perform self-determination to deal with the toxic relationship. The object of this study is a novel entitled It Starts With Us by Colleen Hoover (2022). Through a descriptive-qualitative approach, this study presents a detailed description of the results obtained as a narrative essay. The writer uses Lillian Glass' Toxic People (1995) theory to analyze the signs of the toxic relationship and Deci & Ryan's theory (2017) to describe Self-determination. The findings of this study are that five toxic terror signals were found that describe the nature of toxic people in the novel It Starts With Us. These signals of toxic relationships are shown in actions and conversations. The characteristics of the toxic person include The Angry Pugilist, The Control Freak, The Penny-Pinching Miser, The Opportunistic User, and The Mental Case. In addition, the main characters can deal with toxic relationships by building self-determination in their experience. The signals of toxic behavior that they experience become a motivational trigger in their self-determination, especially in intrinsic motivation, so that they deal with the nature of these people more wisely.
