Abstract

This study examines the illocutionary act found in Jimmy O. Yang’s stand-up comedy show, focusing on two videos entitled ‘Love Language’ and ‘Best Dad Stories.’ The purpose of this study is to identify the types and functions of illocutionary acts used by comedians and to analyze how these acts contribute to the delivery of humor. The study applied a qualitative descriptive method and used Searle’s theory (1969) to analyze illocutionary acts as the analytical framework. The data were obtained by transcribing the performances and analyzing the utterances according to the types and communicative purposes of the speech acts. The results reveal that a variety of illocutionary acts are present, including assertive, directive, expressive, and commissive acts. These acts serve multiple functions, such as informing, expressing emotions, giving praise, making suggestions, and sharing personal experiences. The study found that assertive acts are the most dominant, indicating the comedian’s tendency to deliver opinions and narratives in a humorous yet reflective manner. Overall, this study highlights how illocutionary acts are used strategically in stand-up comedy to create humor, build engagement with the audience, and convey deeper social and cultural commentary.
