Abstract

This study analyzes the code switching used by the judges on the Gala Live Show of X-Factor Indonesia Season 4 in delivering comments related to the participants' performances on stage. This research aims to identify the types of code switching as well as the functions for using code switching in the judges' comments. This research is a descriptive qualitative research using 2 different theories. The first is Poplak's theory (1980) to analyze the types of code switching, and the second uses Apple and Muysken’s theory (1987) to identify the functions behind the use of code switching. The results of this study show that there were 84 utterances found. For the types of code switching, based on the theory used, the author found 19 utterances for tag switching, 11 excerpts for inter-sentential switching, and 54 utterances for intra-sentential switching. Furthermore, functions of using code�switching, there are 51 utterances for expressive function, 2 utterances for directive function, 5 utterances for referential function, 21 utterances for phatic function, 5 utterances for metalinguistic function, and 0 utterance for poetic function. These findings indicate that the judges use code-switching to enhance interaction and communication effectiveness in the context of giving feedback to the participants.
