Abstract

The aim of this study is to discuss how racial discrimination is depicted in Jane Igharo’s novel Ties That Tether (2020). This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with critical race theory by Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic (2001) which describes racial discrimination into four ways: Microaggression, Race as Social Construction, Structural Racism and Intersectionality. This theory explains that racism is not only an individual act, but is inherent in the legal system, culture and social structure. The focus of the analysis also includes the psychological impact of discrimination, such as the tendency to suffer in silence, blame themself (self-blame) and pretend nothing happened (denial). These responses demonstrate the emotional burden experienced by minority groups and reflect common survival mechanisms as described in critical race theory. The results of this study indicate that racial discrimination persists in multicultural societies, both within the family and community.
