Abstract

This study is entitled “Racial Stigma Depicted in the Film Just Mercy (2019).” This study aims to examine the detrimental impact of racial stigma on Black communities, particularly in the United States, where deep-rooted cultural assumptions often result in injustice and discrimination. The object of the study is taken from a film entitled Just Mercy (2019), co-written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. The film centers on Bryan Stevenson, a young lawyer dedicated to overturning Walter McMillian’s wrongful conviction aside from strong evidence of his innocence. Despite racial prejudice, legal obstacles, and community opposition, Stevenson uncovered crucial evidence that strengthened McMillian’s innocence. After years of struggle, McMillian is freed, highlighting the established racial injustice within the American legal system. The research method used is qualitative, with a descriptive approach. Various sources are used to gather data, such as film scenes, dialogue between characters, and cinematographic elements. The theoretical framework is based on the concept of stigma by Erving Goffman (1963), particularly racial stigma as a part of tribal stigma, which occurs when individuals or specific groups face prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination based on their race. Racial stigma is often inherited and attached to a particular group, so members of that group are constantly faced with discrimination and marginalization. The findings show that the characters experience various forms of racial stigma including overt prejudice, harmful stereotypes, discrimination, and social isolation. They respond to these challenges differently from feeling profoundly alienated to demonstrating resilience by standing up for themselves and rejecting the stigma attached to them.
