Abstract

This study aims to reveal the representation of identity crisis in the novel In The Country of Others by Leila Slimani, focusing on the main character, Mathilde. This study uses Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, specifically the concept of identity versus role confusion, to analyze how the identity crisis emerges and is resolved by Mathilde in the context of post-colonial Morocco. The method used is qualitative, with data in the form of dialog and narratives in the novel that are relevant to the issue of identity crisis. The analysis is done descriptively to link the elements of the story with Erikson's theory. The results showed that Mathilde experienced cultural alienation, gender role conflict, and social pressure that exacerbated her confusion over identity. Despite facing severe challenges, she shows efforts to reconcile with her identity through self-reflection and adaptation, although not entirely successful. The conclusion of this study is that Mathilde's identity crisis reflects the universal struggle of individuals in searching for identity amid complex cultural and social demands.
