Abstract

characteristic on The Maze Runner novel”, which has the purpose to analyze and identify two instrinsic elements, setting and character of James Dashner’s The Maze Runner novel. To analy ze the setting and character, the writer used Kennedy’s and Gioia’s theories. Then, descriptive qualitative method was conducted to fulfill the information related to this study. The character chosen is Thomas as a protagonist character, and Glade is a place of setting that supported this study. The results showed that the setting influenced Thomas characteristics. These influences can be seen from his action, his reaction to solve the problem and his intercommunication. In addition, Thomas’ characteristics changed because of Glade, his intelligence, braveness, curiosity, stubborn and telephatic ability grown due the situation happened. This study might be useful for English Department students who are interested in analysing the instrinsic elements of a novel. Keywords : Literature, Novel, setting, characters, influence.
