Abstract

This study was entitled "Defense Mechanism in A Man Called Otto Movie" This study aimed to examine the defense mechanism illustrated in the movie A Man Called Otto (2022), directed by Marc Forster. The character Otto being one of the subjects of discussion, the movie is trying to make the audience follow his daily life by analyzing his defense mechanisms in his life in this movie. Throughout his daily life, Otto's defense mechanism shows that he has lost his wife, which has caused him to become a grumpy older man. As a result, he experience the trauma of losing his wife and uses defense mechanisms consist of denial, isolation, projection, and displacement to protect him from the trauma. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to describe and analyze A Man Called Otto narrative elements to build an understanding of how the defense mechanism is shown in the movie. This study used Sigmund Freud's theories to guide data collection, analysis, and interpretation. The results of this study were able to demonstrate how the main character managed his life with his neighbour, and how he tried to build relationships with others, as well as how the characterization had shown him the realization of life and made him aware of the meaning of life as a whole.
