Abstract

This study is entitled “The Earth in Crisis: Ecocritical perspective in Kim Stanley Robinson’s The Ministry for the Future.” The purpose of this study is to reveal how the climate change issue is depicted in the novel The Ministry for the Future and to analyze how the main character deals with the climate change issue. This study uses ecocriticism by Greg Garrard (2004) as the main theory, particularly the pollution and apocalypse concept. Michel Foucault’s (1995) disciplinary power is also used as a supporting theory to conduct this study. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to identify and present the findings by examining the narrative element that relates to the issue. Moreover, the results of the study show that pollution is the primary driver of global climate change and disasters all over the world as a manifestation of severe climate change. In addition, the main character employs innovative strategies such as creating new currency as a reward to encourage people to sequester carbon and tax the carbon burning, to combat these challenges and promote sustainable practices.
