Abstract

The objectives of this study are to find out and analyze the onomatopoeic words constructed in American Born Chinese graphic novel written by Gene Luen Yang, and then to describe all onomatopoeic words based on the types, characteristics, and usage. Furthermore, it is aimed at describing the lexical meanings and the contextual meanings of onomatopoeic words in American Born Chinese graphic novel which are sometime different from each other. A selected dictionary is used in this study in order to find out the lexical meaning, besides the contextual meanings are based on theory of Widdowson (context is an aspect of state of the use of language that is associated with the relevant meaning. Therefore, the meaning depends on the context in which it is used) to find out the contextual meaning of onomatopoeic words constructed in American BornChinese graphic novel. This study uses qualitative method to answer the statements of the problem. The data were collected from American Born Chinese graphic novel. From the result of the study, there are 75 onomatopoeic words found that are analyzed. From those onomatopoeic words constructed in American Born Chinese graphic novel, 52 onomatopoeic words which are categorized as non – reduplicated onomatopoeia. On the other hand, 23 onomatopoeic words are categorized as reduplicated onomatopoeia are found, 17 onomatopoeic words categorized as exact reduplication, 3 onomatopoeic words categorized as ablaut reduplication, and 3 onomatopoeic words categorized as rhyme reduplication, in which all of them has lexical meaning and contextual meaning.
