Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze gender stereotyping depicted in three short stories entitled The Office by Alice Munro (2015), The Friday Everything Changed by Anne Hart (1950), and A Sorrowful Woman by Gail Godwin (1937). To guide this study, the writer used the perspective of Judith Butler (1999) in gender performativity theory. This study applies qualitative research method. In The Office, the narrative illustrates societal expectations confining women to domestic roles and how subtle social pressures enforce these stereotypes. The Friday Everything Changed addresses the challenges posed to traditional gender roles as girls assert their capability in tasks previously assigned to boys, revealing that these roles are socially constructed. A Sorrowful Woman poignantly reveals the emotional toll of domestic expectations on women, portraying a protagonist whose tragic end underscores the oppressive weight of societal gender norms.
