Abstract
The aim of this study is to present the subject of Phonetics and Phonology which is limited to the study of phonological features of Liverpool English compared to Received Pronunciation as the Standard English found in the interview video of Steven Gerrard as a former captain of Liverpool FC. This study was conducted to find out the differences between Liverpool English and Received Pronunciation and the factors which caused the differences in phonemes. To support the study, the writer used the theory of Honeybone& Watson (2006) to analyze the distinctions of phonemes in Liverpool English, and Honeybone (2007) to analyze the factors of the distinctions. Those theories were used because of their extensive and detailed sources to help solve the problems. The writer uses qualitative method and historical approach to analyze the data findings. The result of the study is that taken from fifty words, nine phonemes are found different in Liverpool English pronunciation compared with Received Pronunciation. It includes seven consonant phonemes (/k/ - /x/, /p/ - /ϕ, /ŋ/ - /ŋg/, /d/ - /ð/, /t/ - /θ/, /b/ - /ß/ and /g/ - /γ/) and two vowel phonemes (/ʌ/ - /ʊ/ and /ɜ:/ - /ɛ/). Therefore, /k/ becomes the most dominant phoneme among them, and the factors causing the differences are social history and population movements.
