Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the archetype patterns in "How to Train Your Dragon " novel by Cressida Cowell based on mythological-archetypal perspective. This study is a part of literary criticism, because it discusses one of the varietes of criticism that is mythological-archetype. The mythological which will be analyzed are Dragons and Viking's Gods while archetypal patterns are Hiccup as the Hero, Old Wrinky as the Wise Old man, Stoick as Father archetype, The Initiation archetype, Black and Red as the Colour archetype and the journey theme. The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. The description of archetypes through the images collected from the novel script from novel itself. This study demonstrated the reference to major characters and theme. It can be used as a medium of the analysis to illustrate the archetype pattern as the implied motifs that can be revealed through the mythological-archetype perspective of literary criticism.
