Abstract

This study aims to identify the types and functions of taboo words found in XXXTentacion's album. It uses Battistella's (2005) sociolinguistic theory to categorize the types of taboo words and Wardhaugh's (2006) theory to categorize the functions of taboo words. The study found that the types of taboo words, based on Battistella's (2005) theory, are categorized into four types: epithets, with 6 taboo words; profanity, with 11 taboo words; vulgarity, with 11 taboo words; and obscenity, with 12 taboo words. Thus, the most frequently appearing type of taboo word is obscenity, with 12 occurrences. The study also found that the functions of taboo words, according to Wardhaugh's (2006) theory, are categorized into four: to show contempt, with 7 taboo words; to draw attention, with 9 taboo words; to mock authority, with 3 taboo words; and being provocative, with 21 taboo words. Therefore, the most frequently appearing function of taboo words in this study is being provocative, with 21 occurrences.
