Abstract

This research explores the portrayal of women's struggle against beauty standards in Lyla Lee’s novel, I'll Be the One. The study focuses on the character Skye Shin, a young fat girl who defies societal expectations by entering a K-pop competition, thereby challenging traditional beauty norms. To guide this study, the writer uses the perspective of Naomi Wolf’s The Beauty Myth (2002) as a theoretical framework. This research examines how Skye’s journey reflects the social pressures women face regarding appearance and the struggle to establish self- acceptance amid rigid beauty standards. Through her determination and resilience, Skye’s story highlights issues of body positivity, self-confidence, and resistance to culturally imposed beauty ideals. This research highlights how beauty myths influence young girls from an early age through media representations, which foster social pressure to conform to narrow beauty standards.
