Abstract

In this thesis, entitled "Social Class Inequality in Triangle of Sadness (2022)" explores the depiction of social class differences and gap in Ruben Ostlund’s 2022 film. This research examines about how Karl Marx’s theory of social class, giving the theories about the conflict between the bourgeoisie and proletariat. This theory reflected in the film’s characters, events and the shifting of power dynamics. This film tells a story about a luxury cruise where all the wealthy passengers live in privilege and excess, but they exploited the crew members who serve them under harsh working conditions. But, after a shipwreck, all the survivors was stranded on a deserted island, the social classes that formed before the shipwreck collapses, and a woman named Abigail, who was a cleaning woman, suddenly step up and rises her power by her survival skills. This study uses qualitative method by analyzing the key scenes that highlight the evolving interactions between the characters with different social classes by focusing on the labor exploitation, wealth gap, and social hierarchies. The analysis is based on the Karl Marx’s theory of Social Classes, as discussed in his 1978 work, Theory of Revolution: The Politics of Social Classes, which explores the relationship between economic power and labor exploitation. The results of this research show that the social hierarchies depend on the context and incident that happened, so it can be changed quickly based on the situation. While the rich passengers take control both space and labor in the yacht, but when all passengers that survived on the deserted island, the power switched dramatically. Abigail’s ascension to leadership demonstrates Marx’s concept that class structures are not inherent but are socially constructed and subject to change, especially in extreme circumstances that alter the distribution of power and resources.
