Abstract

This thesis, titled “Gender Performativity in Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, explores how gender norms are portrayed and challenged through the film’s female characters. Using Judith Butler’s (1990) theory of gender performativity, the study analyzed how gender is constructed through repeated social behaviors and expectations. The research employs qualitative textual analysis to examine the film’s representation of gender roles, focusing on key characters such as Rey, Leia Organa, Captain Phasma, and Maz Kanata. The findings suggest that The Force Awakens both subverts and reinforces traditional gender norms. Rey emerges as an independent protagonist who defies the “damsel in distress” trope, while Leia, Phasma, and Maz Kanata challenge conventional expectations of female leadership. The study highlights the complexities of gender representation in mainstream media and contributes to the discourse on feminist theory and film studies.
