Abstract
This study aims to identify the types of borrowing words in HAI Online Magazine using Hockett's (2013) theory and analyze the meaning changes of these words based on Riemer's (2010) theory of semantic change. Data were collected through document analysis of relevant articles in HAI Online Magazine. The results show that there are 44 absorption words which are divided into 25 loan words, 1 loan shift, and 18 loan blend. In semantic changes, 22 words were found to experience specialization, 16 generalization, 3 pejoration, and 3 amelioration. The morpho- semantic approach is used to identify the form and meaning of the borrowed words based on Hockett's (2013) theory on the types of borrowing words and Riemer's (2010) theory related to changes in meaning. The results show that the process of word absorption from English does not only retain its original meaning, but in some cases experiences an expansion or shift in meaning to be relevant to the Indonesian social and cultural context. This study makes a new contribution by focusing on lifestyle-themed absorption words, which shows how global trends influence the development of the Indonesian language through mass media. In addition, this study also highlights how online media acts as a bridge for the spread of foreign vocabulary in the digital era. The writer hopes that this study can be a reference for future study on the dynamics of language absorption and its impact on the development of the Indonesian language.
