Abstract
The study entilted Child Exploitation due to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Pinocchio 2022 by Guillermo del Toro. This study examines the portrayal of child exploitation due to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and how the protagonist, Pinocchio, deals with child exploitation due to PTSD in Guillermo del Toro's 2022 animated film Pinocchio. Pinocchio is a reimagining of the classic tale of a wooden boy brought to life, and this analysis employs a descriptive qualitative approach to examine both the film's narrative and cinematographic elements. The study is framed by The Black Hole of Trauma theory, as outlined by Bessel A. van der Kolk and Alexander C. McFarlane (1996), which provides a foundation for understanding how traumatic experiences influence Pinocchio’s psychological development. The findings reveal that the film portrays child exploitation and PTSD through Pinocchio’s experiences of rejection and manipulation. Geppetto’s initial rejection of Pinocchio symbolizes neglect, while the societal exclusion the character faces further exacerbates his alienation. Moreover, Count Volpe’s exploitation of Pinocchio for personal gain serves as a key representation of manipulation. Despite these adversities, Pinocchio ultimately demonstrates resilience, learning to confront and cope with his trauma.
