Abstract

This study discusses the traumatic tendencies of the main character in the 2014 Maze Runner film by James Dashner. The purpose of this study is to find traumatic tendencies based on the symptoms of trauma shown by the behavior of the main character as well as how the main character struggles to deal with it. To answer this problem, the method used in this study is a qualitative method guided by narrative elements and cinematic elements accompanied by evidence in the form of screen shots and subtitles in the film. By using Cathy Caruth's trauma theory (1995), the analysis reveals 4 symptoms of trauma in the main character. These symptoms consist of re-experiencing, Avoidance, Physical Numbing and Arousal. On the other hand, factors such as Maintained an optimistic but realistic outlook and Relied on inner moral compass were also found in the analysis as motivations for the main character to want to struggle to overcome his traumatic tendencies.
