Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of borrowing words and analyze their semantic change in selected news articles from Detik.com. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research analyzes data from articles published in 2024, applying Hockett's theory (2013) to classify borrowing words into loanwords, loan blends, and loan shifts, and Riemer's theory (2010) to categorize semantic changes into specialization, generalization, amelioration, and pejoration. The results show that loanwords are the most commonly found type of borrowing, followed by loan blends and loan shifts. Specialization is the most frequently occurring type of semantic change, while only two instances of amelioration were found. This study emphasizes how Detik.com, as a leading online media platform, integrates and adapts English words into the Indonesian language, reflecting the dynamics of linguistic borrowing in digital media and its impact on the development of the Indonesian language. The findings of this study indicate that semantic changes in loanwords occur not only due to linguistic factors but also due to social, cultural, and technological developments. Online media like Detik.com play a significant role in adapting and shaping new meanings of borrowed words, reflecting how language continues to evolve along with changes in time and social communication habits.
