Abstract
This study examines the representation of racial discrimination in Marshall (2017), directed by Reginald Hudlin. The film portrays the systemic injustices faced by Thurgood Marshall as he defends Joseph Spell, a Black man falsely accused of assaulting a white woman. The study addresses two main problems: how racial discrimination is depicted in the film and how the main characters confront these discriminatory structures. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study analyzes dialogues, character interactions, and narrative elements to uncover the dynamics of racism within the legal system. The analysis employs Carmichael and Hamilton's theory (1967) of institutional and individual racism to explore how systemic biases and personal prejudices intersect. The findings reveal that racial discrimination is not only perpetuated through overt personal bias but also systematically embedded within institutional structures. The study suggests that future researchers could further explore related issues such as cultural racism and the intersection of race and gender dynamics within the narrative.
